It’s about time I posted something, so here’s my final project for studio! The brief was to design a vase for the florist industry using a biodegradable plastic. I decided to do a buttonhole/boutonniere vase since the plastic trays that the arrangements usually come in are kind of cheap looking. Hopefully the picture describes it better than words!

Free album download from A Tribe Called Red. This is really really cool.
If you don’t know about Sugru yet you have to check this out. It’s a material a little like Sculpey or Fimo but it air-cures to a soft silicone and sticks to most surfaces- very useful! We bought a couple of packs and it’s everything we hoped for. So far we’ve fixed headphones, cables, pliers, a laptop, an exacto knife and more. The story behind the product is pretty inspiring too.

Rare interview with artist and activist Ai Weiwei on CBC’s Q
I am raising $1000 with Operation Groundswell for local initiatives in Guatemala, a beautiful country recovering from a 36 year civil war. Communities are now dealing with disruptive mining companies (Canadian in particular) and ‘fair’ trade coffee production that locals say are furthering their poverty.
Local NGO’s are helping the communities face down and overcome these hardships, as well as healing the deep wounds left by the war.
Any support is greatly appreciated! I will be going down there this summer to volunteer with the NGO’s, which include:
Rights Action a Canadian-based, non-profit activism group seeking to spread awareness of and put an end to unjust mining practices in Guatemala and Honduras. I will be visiting two communities severely affected by Canadian mining companies (San Miguel Ixtahuacán and Lote Ocho) with other Operation Groundswell participants to speak with the community leaders about the issues they face and ways to protect themselves from further exploitation.
ADISMI (Asociacion de Desarrollo Integral de San Miguel Ixtahaucan) is an activism group dedicated to the protection of the inhabitants of San Miguel Ixtahuacán against the exploitation of the community by the Canadian-based GoldCorps Marlin Mine.
EDELAC works with children facing poor situations at home.
Quetzaltrekkers is a local guiding initiative and social enterprise that leads multiple treks through the regions surrounding Xela. All of the proceeds generated from the treks support a school for street children called “Escuela de la calle”.
With Quetzaltrekkers, I will be participating on a 6-day trek from Nebaj to Todos Santos through the rural indigenous villages of the scenic Cuchumatanes Mountains. The villages of the Cuchumantanes were badly hit by the Civil War, and during the trek there will be several tragic stories first hand from survivors.
